Why Art Matters for Seniors

How do painting classes benefit seniors?

Painting classes offer older adults far more than just creative expression—they support mental, emotional, and even cognitive well-being.

Research has shown that group arts interventions—like painting, music, or dance—significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in older adults. These programs offer a powerful, non-pharmaceutical alternative to traditional treatment methods.

One four-year study involving 256 people with an average age of 87 found that those who engaged in the arts during both midlife and old age were 73% less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment compared to those who didn’t participate in artistic activities. That’s a powerful testament to the long-term benefits of creativity.

Why I love teaching seniors

Teaching watercolor to seniors is one of the most rewarding things that I’ve done. Many of my students show up ready to learn and undeterred by challenges like tremors or hesitation. They’re brave, curious, and often too hard on themselves—and I love helping them gently move past that with encouragement, structure, and joy.

Watercolor is beautiful and accessible, but also one of the most intimidating mediums. I’ve spent thousands of hours working with it—many of them in frustration—and I use that experience to make it easier for my students. With every class, I offer practical tips, clear guidance, and compassionate support.

What I’ve learned from my students

Over time, I’ve learned that seniors come to class for different reasons—some to learn and explore, some to socialize, some to play, and some simply to have fun.

Here are a few things that stand out:

  • Seniors respond well to gentle encouragement and appreciate structure.

  • Simple lines and shapes work best for building confidence and success.

  • Some students continue painting at home with their own supplies.

  • They often tell me the class is “hard” and “fun” at the same time—a perfect balance.

What to expect from my classes

My background is in classical drawing and painting, and I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from ArtCenter College of Design. My teaching combines technical knowledge with heart, as I love creating space where people feel free to be themselves.

My classes are designed specifically for seniors who love to learn, play, and explore. I design each lesson with their needs in mind:

  • No wait time: All paintings are designed to be completed without needing to pause for paint to dry—no hairdryers or long waits required.

  • Fully engaging: The structure of my class keeps students immersed from beginning to end, with demonstrations, painting time, and helpful tips. Often, the room is quiet—not because people aren’t enjoying themselves, but because they’re deeply focused.

  • Beginner-friendly, yet beautiful: I adapt existing tutorials and develop simplified versions of my own artwork to ensure that the subject matter is inspiring, but accessible.

  • Nature-focused: Flowers, plants, and landscapes are our main subjects, all of which bring joy and serenity.

  • Challenging at every level: Whether it’s their first time holding a brush or they’ve painted for years, there’s always something to explore. I learn alongside my students, every single class.
